Local Food Roundtable: Sustainable Agriculture Education, Planning and Networking DRAFT

The Local Food Roundtable will serve an education function.  The objective of the Local Food Roundtable will be to bring together the SARE PDP advisory board, parish and state extension, growers/producers, agricultural professionals, chefs, consumers, NGOs, health care professionals, and LSU AgCenter and SU AgCenter administrators to discuss sustainable agriculture and local food systems in Louisiana. 

The goal of the roundtable will be to solicit and target priority areas for increasing sustainable agriculture education and resources to agents, farmers, and community stakeholders.  Each table will be hosted by a previous Sustainable Agriculture Working Group Conference attendee from either the LSU AgCenter or SU AgCenter.  The table host will facilitate discussion and each table will identify ten strategic goals to increase sustainable agriculture in Louisiana.  An invited speaker will provide the keynote address as well as facilitate discussion and streamline an agenda for expanding sustainable agriculture and suggestions for developing local food projects in Louisiana.

 

2010 Events

January 2010    SSAWG Conference  - Chattanooga, Tennessee

The Louisiana SARE Program will have farmer and agricultural professional scholarships again this year to attend the conference. Funds for the scholarships were made available from USDA Southern SARE and USDA SARE PDP training funds.  

    March 2010      Fruit Grafting Workshops - LA              

TWO WORKSHOPS for Ag Professionals: Friday, March 5th at the Idlewild Research Station and Thursday, March 18th at the Calhoun Research Station.

 Limited space (15 people) is available for each workshop.  Please contact Andre’ Brock ABrock@agcenter.lsu.edu) for the workshop at Idlewild and Rafash Brew (RBrew@agcenter.lsu.edu) to signup for the workshop at Calhoun. For more details contact Carl Motsenbocker.  

April 2010   Livestock Harvesting and Marketing Workshop -LA

TWO WORKSHOPS for Ag Professionals and Farmers: Tuesday, April 6th Calhoun, LA and Wednesday, April 14th Breaux Bridge, LA

The Sustainable Livestock Harvesting and Marketing workshop will provide information on harvesting and marketing options for livestock. This workshop will bring in livestock specialists from Louisiana and livestock producers who have been successful at harvesting and marketing livestock products. In addition, personnel who have been innovative in increasing livestock products that are offered in local markets such as direct marketing at farmers markets will be involved in the workshop. Local Sustainable Food Roundtable - LA

The Roundtable would be a one day conference with a dinner to highlight success stories on the local food front of collaborative efforts of Louisiana farmers, restaurants, CSAs farmers markets, mobile kitchens, as well as experience of extension agents who work with local food systems.  The dinner will be supplied by local chefs and growers with no grant funds required.

Sustainable Farm Tour - LA

The Farm Tour will be a day long tour of a local Louisiana farm that is using sustainable farming techniques.
